Foster High Academic Decathletes advance to State Tournament

Foster High School’s Academic Decathlon team has advanced to the State Tournament after finishing second in Region VI in the Medium School Division.

The team now competes at the State Academic Decathlon in San Antonio on Feb. 25-28.

Each Academic Decathlon team is composed of three levels of competitors-Honors students (those with an "A" grade point average), Scholastic students (those with a "B" grade point average) and Varsity students (those with a "C" grade point average).

The students compete in 10 events: Essay, Speech, Interview, Math, Language and Literature, Music, Art, Science, Economics and Super Quiz (History). This year's theme was "The French Revolution."

Julie Horton and Jacob Nowaczewski are the coaches of the Foster High School Academic Decathlon team.

Foster’s Armando Ghinaglia had the highest individual score in the Honors Division and had the highest individual score in the entire competition. He was first in Art, Economics and Math, second in Language and Literature, Music and Science and third in Essay, Interview and Super Quiz.

Molly McCarthy was the second highest individual scorer in the Honors Division. The Foster student finished first in Speech, second in Economics, Essay and Math and third in Art and Language and Literature.

Rounding out the Honors Division for Foster, William Byers took first in Language and Literature and Super Quiz and took second in the Art, Music, Science and Speech categories.

Brett Lazarine was first in Interview, second in Science and third in Essay in the Scholastic Division, while Daniel Wainikainen earned second place in Speech and third in Math.

William Neeper was the highest scorer at the Regional meet in the Varsity Division, taking second in Art, Economics and Interview, and third in Language and Literature, Music and Super Quiz.

Also in the Varsity Division, Brad Kilgore was first in Essay, second in Speech and third in Art and Language and Literature.

As a team, Foster finished second in both the Super Quiz and the Super Quiz Relay.

Lamar Consolidated High School’s Academic Decathlon team finished fifth at Regionals.                     

The Region VI Academic Decathlon was held January 29th-30th. Twenty-four teams competed in the tournament held at Bellaire High School in Houston.
